Sheffield United beat competition from Brighton & Hove Albion and Derby County to sign Merstham teenager Rhys Norrington-Davies.
The Moatsiders U18s captain has yet to make a first team appearance for the Ryman League Premier Division club but is now on his way to south Yorkshire and the Football League.
The 17-year-old left-back, who is a product of Merstham’s Kinetic Foundation programme, was in high demand with a host of professional clubs vying for his signature, but he put pen-to-paper on a deal that will see him move to the Blades at the end of the season.
Sheffield United are currently top of League One, and are likely to be in the Championship come the start of the 2017-18 campaign.
“We are extremely proud of Rhys and that he has no secured his professional contract at Sheffield United,” said Harry Hudson, Norrington-Davies’ manager at U18 level.
“He has but so much hard work to become the player he is today, he saw seven of his peers move on to professional clubs this year be he continued to dig in and believe he had the quality to progress.”
And Norrington-Davies was grateful to his boss at Merstham. The teenager told Hudson and the Kinetic Foundation team: “Thank you for all of your support and commitment throughout the last two years. Without all of the coaches at Kinetic I wouldn’t be where I am today.”
